The ability to read is one of the keys to good educational achievements. It is the basic foundation of being literate, and without the ability to read, children are unable to access a curriculum which is rich and diverse. If reading is not taught properly, it leads to a lifetime of poor opportunities in economic terms as well as the inability to enjoy and appreciate the joys of written language. The process to teach reading should therefore be regarded as the most crucial aspect of educating an individual.
There are different methods to teach reading that are prevalent among teachers. The most widely used method is the phonics method. This method works by teaching a child the alphabet first, where the kid learns to identify the sounds made by a single letter. A child learning to read by following the phonics method learns to identify each individual letter and the sound produced while pronouncing it in different ways. Once the child has mastered the sounds, he/she will start putting together two or more letters to form simple words and then slowly move on to more complex words, thereby learning to read.
The ‘look and say’ method is another approach to teach reading which has been in use for a long tome. It is a method where children are taught to recognize entire words and sentences rather than identifying the sounds made by letters. This method makes use of flashcards with the words written on them and a picture related to that word. The ‘look and say’ method teaches reading through rote learning. It does not allow the use of tools as in the phonics method except for the picture flash cards. However, since this method forces students to read by memorization, it may result in a student being a poor reader. To ensure that the child learns to read properly, it is advised to combine the rote method with the phonics system.

The language experience approach is another method to teach reading that’s employed by many teachers. In this method, the student’s own words are used to help him/her to read. Students draw pictures of familiar object and the teacher writes a caption or a sentence underneath the word, which the student is encouraged to read.
Several pictures and accompanying captions are put together to make a book, which the child goes through over and over again. This process allows the child to learn to read gradually. A lot of teachers use this method as the first approach to teach reading since it helps the children understand what they are drawing. This method of teaching promotes the concept development of the child and also increases the vocabulary of the kid.
There are many ways and methods to teach reading, each different from the other, which a teacher can adopt. Each of these methods has certain specific advantages and disadvantages. The important thing to remember is that a child learns as long as he/she has an interest in the subject. To generate interest in reading, it is essential to keep children surrounded by books and literary aids and make the process of learning pressure-free and fun. Constant interaction with books and reading aids will also go a long way as they facilitate the child to learn how to read and are able to hold the child’s attention.
