Learning to read is not a difficult skill to acquire, yet in most western (English speaking) nations, the rate of illiteracy is shockingly high. 14% of all adults in US and Canada are considered functionally illiterate; 42% of all U.K. school children leave school without achieving a basic level of functional English.

Why is that so many individuals have poor reading and writing skills? And as parents, is it better to teach your child to read at an early age, or simply wait for your child to learn reading once they begin school?

Being a father of several wonderful children, it is my firm belief that it is to your children's absolute benefit to start teaching them reading at a young age. In fact, we have successfully taught our own children to read at just 2 and 3 years old. Parent's who start to teach their baby to read at a young age generally sense how smart young children can really be, and know instinctively that kids are superbly capable of learning - far more capable than most adults give them credit for.

Once you come to this realization, you take action, and your action is affirmed by the amazing progress your child makes, and I'm speak from experience - not just conjecture. It's exciting and humbling to see the amazing aptitude and capabilities of young children for learning reading - or anything for that matter.

Perhaps seeing other babies and young children reading has made you wonder if your baby and children can learn to read at a young age age well. They can! As long as you give them a chance, and teach them with utmost patience and love. Parents and children have nothing to lose learning reading at a young age. It provides for a fulfilling and rewarding experience for both the parent and the child. It also offers limitless possibilities for your child as they develop.

Teaching your child reading helps to build the relationship between parent and child, and at the same time, you as a parent, will develop a very profound respect for the intelligence of your child, and this realization will help you discover what your children are truly capable of.

Having your children learning to read at a young age gives them a lifetime love of reading. Most parents wish that their children would spend less time in front of the TV, and spend a little more time reading; however, teaching your baby to read at a young age helps them develop a strong desire to read, and reading books becomes one of the main sources of entertainment and fun for your children.
